Modernizing Veterinary Medicine Education at AUT

The Agricultural University of Tirana, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, is leading a strategic reform of its curriculum, ensuring that graduates are not only competent veterinarians but also prepared for the evolving demands of the profession in Albania and Europe. This initiative is part of the AUT–BOKU 2030 Strategy, which aims to align AUT with leading European universities in the Life Sciences, strengthen research, and promote knowledge transfer.

Through extensive self-assessment, international consultations, and collaboration with BOKU University and EAEVE experts, the Faculty has designed a modern, forward-looking, and context-sensitive curriculum that responds both to national priorities and broader European expectations. In particular, the curriculum takes into account recommendations emerging from the European Union accession process, addressing key priorities for the veterinary sector such as public health, food safety, antimicrobial resistance, animal welfare, and the strengthening of veterinary services.

How the New Curriculum Responds to Current and Future Challenges

Competency-Based Clinical Training

Students gain practical experience in a structured and progressive manner, supported by skills laboratories, core clinical rotations, elective hands-on training, and opportunities outside the institution. Each procedure is practiced in a safe and supervised environment before being applied to live animals.

Veterinary Public Health and EU Preparation

A new integrated Veterinary Public Health (VPH) module addresses antibiotic resistance, food safety, surveillance, and animal welfare, ensuring that graduates are prepared for responsibilities aligned with the EU and the regulatory environment of veterinary services.

Innovative Assessment and Quality Assurance

Assessments now focus on competencies, combining OSCEs, practice logs, and formative evaluations to measure not only knowledge but also practical and professional skills. Curriculum design and digital tools facilitate learning and ensure consistency across departments.

Transversal and Professional Skills

Soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and client interaction, are integrated throughout the program, reflecting European recommendations for professional competence.

Strategic Impact

This reform ensures that the Veterinary Medicine program at AUT

  • "Proactively prepares students for EU accession requirements and professional standards in development.
  • Integrates international best practices while preserving the strength of the national curriculum.
  • Supports the objectives of the AUT–BOKU 2030 project by enhancing the quality of education, scientific research, and international cooperation.

Through this comprehensive approach, the Faculty is creating a future-proof, innovative, and student-oriented veterinary program, positioning AUT as a leader in veterinary education in Albania and the Western Balkans.
