Short description of project
  In the bid of higher productivity and lower costs in the agricultural production, many farmers had to adapt their production to the globalized economic environment, including the use of hybrid varieties. Consequently, many native crop species and varieties (ecotypes, landraces) have disappeared or survived only locally in subsistence farms and gardens. Throughout the last century, the selection of varieties and also the preservation of germplasm has passed from farmers to the business of multinational corporations: the consequences of which are standardization of production, homogenization of organoleptic and qualitative aspects, loss of the traditional adaptation of the genotypes and the cultivation environment, and especially the loss of genetic variability and increasingly limited availability of genetic resources (towards the phenomenon of "genetic erosion"). CABRA is a bilateral project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development. It promotes the conservation and sustainable use of natural and agricultural biodiversity in selected mountain areas in the North of Albania. In view of the situation described above, which can also be observed in the project area, local agrobiodiversity should be protected to maintain local ecosystems intact and provide for sustainable local economic development. Therefore, local knowledge about native crops should be expanded and/or reactivated, autochthonous seeds and plant materials made available to farmers in the region, and the farmers’ capacities in cultivating local native crops strengthened.
Specific objectives
- Collect and propagate local cultivars from the project area both in situ (on farms in the Northern Alps) and ex situ (on site of IPGR ground);
- Distribute/ disseminate plant material among local farmers in the project area;
- Train local farmers from the project area in breeding and cultivating the local cultivars;
- Strengthen the capacity of the IPGR in in situ conservation.
Responsibilities of the Institute of Plant Genetic Resources as Albanian partner
1. Elaborate, in close coordination with CABRA, the Plan of Operations for this measure, indicating outcomes, milestones, timelines, involved actors and inputs;
2. Ensure that the financial sources provided through this local subsidy are used as indicated in the detailed budget;
3. Ensure constant communication with CABRA project;
4. Regularly provide Information on the implementation of activities in written form to the  CABRA project;
5. Collaborate with and involve other partners and institutions (upon agreement with CABRA) to guarantee the successful implementation of the measure;
6. Establish and maintain a fruitful dialogue among all actors;
Responsibilities of CABRA
1. Oversee regularly the progress of the measures according to the agreed Plan of Operations(activities, timeline, costs);
2. Provide technical advice and financial resources for the implementation of this measure;
3. Support the networking amongst the different actors involved in the measure;
